Who We Are

Parent and community volunteers administer and support all aspects of team operations, from bookkeeping and fundraising to staffing meets.  Our professional, certified coaches train all levels of swimmers and prepare them for competition.  HLST is proudly celebrating its 40th year and has qualified athletes for competition at the national level in recent years.  We have a modest scholarship fund and strive to provide scholarship support to families in financial crisis.  Our tax exempt purpose is to foster amateur sports competition.  Swim meets are a volunteer-intensive endeavor.  At every meet, we must staff lane timers (stopwatch to time swimmers actively competing), place judges (record the order of each swimmer's finish), electronic system operation, equipment repair and maintenance, staff and provide food and beverages for the hospitality tent for visiting coaches and meet officials, staff and provide items for concessions (an important means to raise funds), program sales, announcers, posting of results, and set-up and clean-up.

What We Do

Helena Lions Swim Team (HLST) is a community-based competitive swim team challenging participants to achieve personal excellence in swimming and in life.  As a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization, HLST fosters amateur sports competition at the local, regional and national levels, for Helena area children and youth. The team draws members from as far away as Townsend and Garrison and is the only team in Lewis and Clark County that is a USA Swimming-sanctioned team, so members are eligible to compete at events from local to the Olympics.  HLST operates year-round with a professional staff of certified coaches for all levels of swimmers, and relies on the generosity of business sponsors and individual volunteers to support the mission of the organization and its competitive events.  HLST was organized in 1973 as a parent-run, non-profit organization and has continued to grow in size with approximately 100 team members today.  When a swimmer becomes a member of the team, they learn the values of commitment, time management, sportsmanship and teamwork.  Swimming provides physical, emotional and intellectual skills that will last a lifetime.
